The third generation was redesigned for the 2006 model year on an all new platform, first shown at the Frankfurt show in 2005. It went on sale in Japan in 2005, and it was offered in short and long wheelbase versions for different regions. This was the first model year of the Toyota RAV4 (third generation, XA30), 2006 to 2012, which took over from the Toyota RAV4 (second generation, XA20); the 2007 model year follows it.
