The RAV4 first appeared in Japan and Europe in 1994, with the Japanese launch coming in May as a three door compact SUV built on a platform that borrowed from the Carina and Corolla. It was meant to combine the roomy cargo space and high seating of an SUV with the handling of a mid size car. This was the first model year of the Toyota RAV4 (first generation, XA10), 1994 to 1999, the first generation covered for the Toyota RAV4; the 1995 model year follows it. Model year pages for the Toyota RAV4 run from 1994 to 2026.
