The Sambar of 1981 was in its ninth and last year of the third generation, the Sambar 550 truck K77 and vans K87, with four wheel drive as an option on both truck and van, and the water cooled 544 cc EK23 engine. The fourth generation, the KR, would appear on 9 May 1982. Four wheel drive became optional in 1980. The Sambar has used a rear engine, rear wheel drive layout with body on frame rather than unibody construction.
