The Sambar of 1988 was in its seventh year of the fourth generation, the KR and KT, with the 544 cc EK23 engine and four wheel independent suspension. The EN05 four cylinder engine later used in the Rex was never fitted to the KR and KT Sambar, as it would require re engineering to be a replacement platform. Later generations used the water cooled engine from the Subaru Rex, Vivio and the Pleo. The Sambar has used a rear engine, rear wheel drive layout with body on frame rather than unibody construction.
