The Sambar of 1991 was in its second year of the fifth generation, sharing its EN07 engine with the Subaru Vivio, which now had four cylinders and 40 PS in the carbureted standard model, and 55 PS in the optional supercharged model coupled with fuel injection. The Sambar has used a rear engine, rear wheel drive layout with body on frame rather than unibody construction. Later generations used the water cooled engine from the Subaru Rex, Vivio and the Pleo.
