The Subaru R1 entered production on 4 January 2005 as a two door version of the R2, with a shorter body and wheelbase, and it did not use the maximum length allowed for kei cars, which only a few other kei cars had done since the 1989 Autozam Carol. Through the end of 2005 it was offered in one spec level, with a 658 cc Subaru EN engine in the I, R and STi versions. The R1 is a kei car manufactured by the Japanese carmaker Subaru.
