The Leone of 1991 was in its eighth year of the third generation, sold in Japan as the Leone and abroad as the Loyale or L-Series, with the larger Legacy taking over the flagship role. The Subaru Leone Van continued to be sold, and was to be replaced by the badge engineered Nissan AD van in 1994. The Leone was released as a replacement for the Subaru 1000 and was the predecessor of the Subaru Impreza. The word leone is Italian for lion.
