For 1987 the Leone received a facelift with a smoothed out appearance. The RX coupe was introduced in 1987. In North America the 1.6 liter engine was dropped completely from the lineup due to its lack of power. The hatchback and BRAT of the previous generation were made alongside until 1987 for the BRAT in the United States. The Leone was released as a replacement for the Subaru 1000 and was the predecessor of the Subaru Impreza.
