The first generation Leone was released on 7 October 1971 as a front wheel drive coupe with trim levels DL, GL and GSR, and in April 1972 came the two and four door sedans. Subaru broke the pattern of the time by introducing a mass produced four wheel drive passenger car, after testing the waters with a limited series of four wheel drive Fuji Rabbit and Subaru 1000 Vans. The four wheel drive station wagon was released in September 1972. Its model years run from 1971 to 1978.
