Production of the Baja began on 18 July 2002 as a 2003 model at the Subaru of Indiana Automotive factory in Lafayette, Indiana. A team led by Peter Tenn, Subaru senior designer, drew the Baja in the United States, with technical support from Subaru Japan, and in an August 2002 interview he said its jarring look was an homage to rally race trucks. The Baja name derives from the Mexican peninsula of Baja California, home to the Baja 1000 off road race.
