The MG EX-E was a mid-engined sports car concept shown by MG at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1985, inspired by the Ferrari 308 and designed by Roy Axe and Gerry McGovern. Its drivetrain and chassis came from the mid-engined MG Metro 6R4 rally car. It did not lead to a production car, although Gerry McGovern went on to style the smaller MG F sports car, which carries subtle echoes of the EX-E in its rear fascia and lamp clusters. At the time some thought it might presage a coupe version of the Rover 800 series, which was a few months from launch, but a conventionally styled 800 coupe did not appear until 1992. The car is preserved at the British Motor Museum at Gaydon.
