Shelby Daytona

Automobiles

The Shelby Daytona Coupe, also called the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, is an American sports coupe that Shelby American built to race the Ferrari 250 GTO in the GT class of international endurance racing. It was a streamlined evolution of the open Shelby Cobra roadster, using the Cobra chassis and drive-train under an aerodynamic body drawn by Pete Brock, because the roadster's drag held its top speed on the Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans well below the Ferrari's. Six cars were built between 1964 and 1965, the first at Shelby's shop in Venice, California, and the other five by Carrozzeria Gransport in Modena, Italy. The coupes won the GT class at Le Mans in 1964 and gave Shelby the 1965 International Championship for GT Manufacturers, the first world title for an American constructor.
