Willys Itamaraty

Automobiles

The Willys Itamaraty was a large luxury sedan sold in Brazil by Willys Overland from 1966 to 1971, launched as the most sophisticated version of the Aero Willys 2600. It was named after the building that houses the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in allusion to the glamour of Brazilian diplomacy, and it added more chrome, a new front grille and new tail lamps, with solid jacaranda wood on the dashboard, leather seats and a radio. Under the bonnet a three litre engine of 132 horsepower, 140 under Ford management, replaced the Aero engine. The car was the base of the first Brazilian limousine, the Itamaraty Executivo, an idea of the Willys president William Max Pearce, drawn by the Catalan stylist Jose Maria Ramis Melquizo and built by hand with Karmann-Ghia from 1967, when the first one was handed to President Castelo Branco; only 27 were made, two of them prototypes. Itamaraty production ended in 1971 together with the Aero Willys.
