Volvo S80

Automobiles

The Volvo S80 is an executive car that the Swedish maker Volvo Cars produced from 1998 to 2016 across two generations, taking the place of the rear-wheel-drive S90 as the company's flagship sedan. The first generation, made available for the 1999 model year, was built at the Torslanda Works in Gothenburg, with a few 1999 cars for the North American market built at Volvo's Halifax Assembly plant, and had no station wagon version. It took styling cues from the Volvo ECC concept and used the P2 platform, with a straight-six engine in a transverse mounting that was too large for any existing manual gearbox, so Volvo developed its own M65, and over 368,000 were built. The second generation, released in 2006 for the 2007 model year, was based on the P3 platform also used by the Ford S-Max, the third-generation Ford Mondeo and the Ford Galaxy, had an estate counterpart in the third-generation V70, and in June 2007 earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick. The S80L, a long-wheelbase variant, was sold only in China. The model was replaced by the second-generation S90 in the later half of 2016.
