The Simca Ariane was a large saloon launched in April 1957 and built at Simca's Poissy factory until 1963. Ford France had built the plant between 1937 and 1940 and equipped it for the V8 Ford Vedette, but French taxes on large engines hurt sales, and the Suez crisis made a small-engined version attractive. Simca fitted the body of the first-generation Vedette with the 1,290 cc four-cylinder Flash engine from the Aronde, creating a car that stressed economy over acceleration, and the Ariane 8 with the 2,351 cc V8 of the Vedette followed in October of the same year. Production reached 33,733 cars in 1961 and fell to 14,284 in 1962.
