In 1967 the Rover company was purchased by Triumph's owner, Leyland, one year before the Rover 3500 was introduced. The Rover V8 engine was based on Buick's compact 3.5 liter V8 from the Buick Special, whose rights Rover purchased as a way to differentiate the P6 from its chief rival, the Triumph 2000. The P6 of 1967 was still the four cylinder Rover 2000, with a choice of the single SU SC or twin SU TC engines.
