The Mark I was finally launched on 10 July 1986, taking the place of the decade old Rover SD1. Joint development with Honda had begun in 1981 under the codename XX, the corresponding Honda being the Legend, codenamed HX. Initially only a four door saloon body was offered, and a five door liftback or hatchback, called the fastback, became available in 1988. A diesel with a VM Motori engine came in 1990. Its model years run from 1986 to 1991.
