The addition of more powerful versions of the Rover 200 Series, including the GTi models, saw the demise of the high performance MG Maestro 2.0 EFi and Turbo models in 1991. The R8 Rover 200 had been launched in October 1989, and was made as a hatchback at Longbridge, with the Maestro continuing alongside the Rover 200 hatchback as a budget option until production finished in December 1994. The Rover 200 was then a hatchback built at Longbridge by the Rover Group.
