In 1989 the Range Rover's V8 grew from 3.5 to 3.9 litres, partly to compensate for the 3.5-litre engine's use as an option in the new Discovery, which was built on the Range Rover's chassis. The Turbo D diesel was enlarged to 2.5 litres. To establish its reputation in America eight special edition Range Rovers took part in the Great Divide Expedition, a 12-day, 1,128-mile trek in the Colorado Rockies from 21 August to 2 September.
