The first generation Rambler American reintroduced the old Nash Rambler model of 1950, which could be slightly modified and used as the basis for the new American, since American Motors' financial condition meant it could not afford to develop an entirely new car. The reintroduction leveraged Rambler's renown for fuel economy and wins in the Mobil Economy Runs. The only engine was a 195.6 cubic inch flathead six producing 90 horsepower. Its model years run from 1958 to 1960.
