For 1988 the front seat belts were moved from the B pillars to the doors, to meet the passive restraint mandate for 1989, and the LD2 Quad 4 engine became available in the Grand Am, replacing the previous model year's 3.0 liter V6 on the options list. The Grand Am shared its platform with the Buick Skylark and the Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais, which had been renamed for 1988, and was built at Lansing.
