The 2002 Chrysler Prowler was the last model year of the car, and the last Prowler was built on 15 February 2002. The model niche for a Chrysler sports car was later filled by the Chrysler Crossfire in 2004. The Prowler was based on a 1993 concept car and remained a single generation. In all, 11,702 cars were built under the Plymouth and Chrysler badges. The Plymouth Howler concept shown in 1999 was a later variation of the idea, and the retro hot rod look was credited to Chrysler's design chief Thomas Gale and a thesis project by Chip Foose.
