The Barracuda debuted on 1 April 1964 as a fastback version of the Valiant, using its wheelbase, hood, doors and bumpers, with new trunk and rear glass. The big wraparound rear window of about 14 square feet was the focus of the design. Engines were the Valiant's slant six or Chrysler's all new 273 V8 with 180 horsepower, and the base price was about $2,500. It was marketed as family transport more than a sports car, so the Mustang that followed took the youth market. It was also the last year for push button control of the optional automatic.
