The Shelby Dakota is a limited production performance version of the Dodge Dakota Sport pickup truck, offered by Shelby for 1989 only. It was Shelby's first rear wheel drive vehicle in many years and his first production pickup. Starting from a short wheelbase, short bed, standard cab truck, Shelby replaced the 3.9 litre V6 with a 5.2 litre V8 with throttle body injection, using a pair of electric fans in place of the belt driven fan to fit the tight engine bay, for 175 horsepower and 270 pound feet of torque, with a four speed automatic and a limited slip differential. Motor Trend measured 0 to 60 miles per hour in 8.5 seconds. Trim included special graphics and wheels, blacked out trim, wheelarch extensions, a sports bar behind the cab and a front air dam with fog lamps. Production totaled 1,500 trucks, 860 red and 540 white.
