The Toyota Hilux Surf is the name under which Toyota marketed the 4Runner in Japan, and it was withdrawn from the market in 2009. In some markets the 4Runner was branded the Hilux Surf, which was replaced by the Fortuner, a similar but lower-cost alternative based on the Hilux platform. For the first generation N60 series Hilux Surf and export specification 4Runner introduced in 1983, Toyota did not develop an entirely new model but modified the existing Hilux with a short-bed pickup body. Like the Bronco and the Blazer, it also removed the rear wall behind the front seats of the corresponding pickup. The Hilux Surf was offered in two trim lines, SR and SSR, with either a 2.0 litre 3Y gasoline engine or a 2.4 litre 2L diesel.
