Sabre (tank)

Automobiles

The Sabre was a hybrid reconnaissance vehicle in the CVR(T) family, built by fitting the turret of the wheeled Fox armoured reconnaissance vehicle to the tracked hull of an FV101 Scorpion. It was introduced as a cheaper way of getting something like the 30 mm cannon armed FV107 Scimitar, with a slightly lower turret, and entered British Army service in 1995. Trials showed weak defences, so the turret was given new smoke grenade launchers and a chain-fed 7.62 mm L94A1 machine gun with an ammunition hopper. The combination of Fox turret and Scorpion chassis was not a success and the Sabre was withdrawn from British service in 2004.
