The Porsche 597 Jagdwagen, or hunting car, was a light four-wheel-drive military vehicle designed in the 1950s to do the job of the Volkswagen Kuebelwagen, the American Jeep and the British Land-Rover. It began as a prototype for a 1953 tender from the West German police and a future West German Army, and it never reached mass production after the DKW Munga was chosen for reasons of economics. It used an air-cooled flat-four from the Porsche 356 mounted at the rear, 1.5 litres at first and 1.6 later, with about 37 kW, a five-speed gearbox with a selectable two- or four-wheel drive, a 2,060 mm wheelbase and a maximum speed of about 100 km/h.
