Alvis Saracen

Automobiles

The FV603 Saracen was a six-wheeled armoured personnel carrier designed and built by Alvis from 1952 to 1976, the carrier of the FV600 series beside the Saladin armoured car. Besides driver and commander it carried a squad of eight soldiers and a troop commander, usually with a roof turret holding a Browning .30 machine gun and firing ports in the sides. It was used by operators around the world and became familiar in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, nicknamed the Sixers, where retrofitted armour, seatbelts and padding protected crews but added weight and caused some engine failures. It also featured in the South African enforcement of apartheid, and some countries still use it in secondary roles.
