The Ital was first launched on 1 July 1980, with the design code ADO73 F/L, as a facelift of the Series 2 Marina, taking its name from Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign studio. From October 1980 an automatic version was available with the 2.0 liter O-Series power unit, as the range topping 2.0 HLS. The 1980 Morris Ital features large rear lamp clusters and a new front end, but the 1971 vintage of the design was obvious.
