The sedan bodywork of the fifth generation Galant was sold in North America from 1985 for the 1986 model year as the Mitsubishi Galant Sigma. In Japan the Galant won the West German Golden Steering Wheel award in the two liter and under class in 1985, and a special edition, the EXE, marked the three million Galant produced. The name EXE was a pun by the rally driver Kenjiro Shinozuka on the phrase for going with the Galant.
