In 2017 the Outlander PHEV topped plug in hybrid sales in Europe for the fifth year running. Because of California regulations that require a battery monitoring unit, Mitsubishi delayed the United States launch of the PHEV to mid 2017 as a model year 2017. In September 2017 a 2.0 liter locally assembled variant debuted in Malaysia, before going on sale in October 2018. Global sales of the Outlander achieved 1.5 million in October 2016, fifteen years after launch.
