For the 1991 model year the 1.5 liter 4G15 engine's new twelve valve heads boosted power from 81 to 92 horsepower, and a new GS sedan was offered. The Wagon and Van versions were kept in production with minor updates until 1991, as there was no station wagon of the third generation. The fourth generation Mirage made its debut in October 1991. The Mirage hatchback models of 1978 to 2003 were classed as subcompact cars, while the sedan and wagon, sold as the Lancer, were compact.
