Mitsubishi renamed the DE sedan as ES for model year 2001. The first facelift of the Lancer arrived in 2001, based on the Taiwanese market Lancer, and the Dingo, a Mirage derived model, was facelifted in 2001 and canceled in 2003. The fifth generation Mirage was in its seventh year. In Japan the Mirage was sold at a retail chain called Car Plaza. The Mirage hatchback models of 1978 to 2003 were classed as subcompact cars, while the sedan and wagon, sold as the Lancer, were compact.
