Sales of the Libero Cargo ended at the end of March 2003, and the Lancer Cargo succeeded it. The Libero had been sold since May 1992 as a station wagon and a commercial van, and it was the successor of the Mirage Wagon, Lancer Wagon, Mirage Van and Lancer Van of the time. The name Libero was Italian for free, chosen for a versatile car with a wide range of action and a lively drive. The Libero had rear fog lamps as standard, unusual for a Japanese car then.
