The eighth generation Lancer was released in Japan in May 2000 as the Lancer Cedia, meaning century diamond, in sedan and station wagon forms, built at Mitsubishi's Mizushima plant, while the 1995 Mirage based car continued in most markets for a while longer. In Europe the Lancer name was dropped in some countries because of the Carisma, so the Evolution VII sold there was called the Carisma. North America got it in 2001 as a 2002 model, replacing the Mirage, and a restyle came for 2004. Its model years run from 2000 to 2006.
