In the United States the Galant Sigma was released for the 1988 model year, although the sixth generation Galant was introduced for 1988 while the older fifth generation bodyshell stayed in production alongside it. Sales of the Sigma began in 1988 and ended in 1993, with trims including a base 1.8 liter Super Saloon with a carburetor and a 2.0 liter Super Saloon. The name Galant comes from the French word for chivalrous.
