The fifth generation Galant was introduced to the New Zealand market in mid 1984 as the Mitsubishi Sigma. For the initial 1984 production run the rear number plate was above the bumper, however for 1985 and 1986 the plate moved to below the bumper in the manner of the Japanese domestic models. The front wheel drive Galant had been shifted in August 1983 from rear wheel drive. The name Galant comes from the French word for chivalrous.
