A fifth generation model shifted to front wheel drive in August 1983, as a four door sedan and four door hardtop with different styling. For 1983 and 1984 the Australian built car carried Mitsubishi Sigma badges in the United Kingdom, before imports were finally discontinued, the car having been unsuccessful with the Lonsdale name. The Galant competed with the Toyota Corona, Nissan Bluebird, Honda Accord and Mazda Capella.
