The Galant received a facelift for the 1996 model year with a new front bumper, and the eighth generation of 1996 won the 1996 to 1997 Car of the Year Japan award for the second time. It was a more curvaceous design in the coke bottle style, with larger Astron engines of up to 125 PS in the 2.0 liter size, and the Eterna Sigma and Galant models were sold side by side in Japan. The Galant evolved from a compact sedan into a mid-size car over its life.
