In July 2000 new side impact safety standards were to take effect in Japan. By 2000 in the Company Report the now phased out FTO was simply described as the little brother of the GTO, a sports coupe which gives full expression to the fun to drive philosophy. The FTO was produced from 1994 to 2000. Upon its debut it won the Car of the Year Japan award for 1994 to 1995. FTO stands for Fresh Touring Origination, and the name recalls the Galant FTO coupe of 1971, one of the company's first sports cars.
