An experimental electric version of the FTO was produced, called the FTOEV, utilizing high performance lithium ion batteries. The FTO of 1999 was in its sixth year, a front wheel drive sport compact car with the facelift front bumper of 1997, sold in Japan and in limited numbers through official dealers in a few other countries. The FTO was originally planned exclusively for the Japanese domestic market, and its popularity as a grey market import led to eventual limited distribution through official dealers in several countries.
