The eK of 2018 was in its sixth year as the third generation, with the eK Custom and the Active Gear grade, a kei car developed by NMKV and sold beside the Nissan Dayz and Dayz Roox. The scandal over fuel economy testing that came to light in 2016 had led to the acquisition of Mitsubishi Motors by Nissan, but production of the eK continued under NMKV. The third generation eK was the first major design update since the eK began sales.
