In April 2016 Mitsubishi announced that it had discovered improper fuel economy testing procedures that affected several kei car models, among them the eK, the eK Space and the OEM supplied Nissan Dayz and Dayz Roox. About 625,000 vehicles were affected. Production continued under the NMKV joint venture, and sales restarted in July of the same year. The third generation eK was the first major design update since the eK began sales.
