In 1989 the Cordia was still built in Japan by Mitsubishi, though it had left the American and Australian markets, and was in its seventh year with front wheel drive, strut suspension and a choice of 1.6 and 1.8 liter engines. It remained the sibling of the Tredia sedan and shared many parts with it under the skin, including in New Zealand assembly. The Cordia was one of the first mass-market cars to offer an optional electronic instrument cluster using a liquid-crystal display.
