In May 1964 Colt 1000 touring cars took part in the second Japan Grand Prix race at the Suzuka Circuit, in the T-III touring car class, where Sohei Kato won the class and three other drivers, Toru Yokoyama, Yusuke Ishizu and Hachiro Tanaka, took the next places, a clean sweep of the top four. It followed the successes of the preceding Mitsubishi 500 and Colt 600. The Colt 1000 had a column shifter for its fully synchronized four speed manual transmission.
