The Carisma of 2000 was in its sixth year, a large family car for the European market with a 1.9 liter DI-D common rail diesel engine of 100 horsepower, the same as used in both Volvo and Renault cars. It was built at NedCar in the Netherlands, with over 350,000 produced over its life. The model name was derived from a combination of the English car and the Greek kharisma, meaning divine gift. The Carisma competed with the likes of the Ford Mondeo in the traditionally conservative European company car market.
