The new Mini entered production on 26 April 2001, and the first new generation Mini Hatch was introduced in July 2001 as the first model under the Mini marque after the original Mini ended the previous year. It had been shown as a concept by the Rover Group, then owned by BMW, at the 1997 Frankfurt show, and BMW moved its production site from Longbridge to the Oxford plant at Cowley when it sold off Rover in 2000.
