The hardtop Mini Coupe was unveiled in June 2011 and formally launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011, going on sale in the United Kingdom from 1 October 2011. The Mini line up was expanded with a coupe like the model first shown in 2009. It was a strict two seater, which was a first for a BMW built Mini, and derived from the Mini convertible. Production was shown in the 2011 documentary Megafactories.
