For 1969 Mercury debuted an all new generation of its full size line, with sedans on a 124 inch wheelbase and station wagons on 121 inches. The Monterey, with a renamed Monterey Custom replacing the Montclair, joined the Marquis as the only full size ranges, and the Monterey station wagon dropped its Commuter name. It was more rounded than before, distinguished from the Marquis by lacking hidden headlights. It was distinguished from the Ford by its own grille and taillamp styling.
