For 1965 Mercury redesigned its full size line, with the Monterey again serving as the base trim sedan. It grew to a 123 inch wheelbase, four inches longer than Ford, with an all new chassis and a coil sprung live rear axle, abandoning leaf springs. The exterior took design elements from the Lincoln Continental, with four horizontal headlamps, and the Monterey was now offered in six body styles. A 250 horsepower 390 V8 was standard.
